I cradle the tome in my hands the next morning, laying down select wards that wonât harm or banish Avitue. To the uninitiated, Iâm sure the process looks like a lot of monotonous pacing and muttering, but from where she lounges in bed, Avitue tracks my every movement with the rapt attention of a cat watching a songbird.
Her outfit of the moment is composed wholly of a lacy black thong and gold nipple rings.
I ignore her for now, frowning down at the tome as I recite the final line to set the ward. When I hold up my hand, thereâs a pulse of white-blue light through the room that blankets every surface before it dissipates. Avitue shivers at the effect but nothing more.
âI hate that,â she says. âFeels like a swarm of little crawly things.â
I close the tome and return it to its place at the bottom of the chest. âYou canât complain about it much when itâll keep your colleague from paying us another visit.â
When I finally turn to her, sheâs holding up what I think might be a dildoâa red monstrosity with conjoined phalluses and two heads. I donât give her the satisfaction of a reaction. âWhy do they want the tome?â I ask when I rejoin her on the bed.
âAs you humans say, knowledge is power. If we can destroy even one of them, we weaken your ability to pass on your knowledge. The less future nephilim know, the easier our work becomes. The more we know about what you know, the stronger we become.â
âThatâs why you were so shocked when I showed you the tome. Iâd handed you half your objective, and you didnât even have to do anything.â
Avitue taps the dildo thoughtfully against her lips as if itâs only an ink pen. âIt was the trust that shocked me, but yes. I wasnât even sure exactly what I was looking for. None of us have seen them. Weâre only aware that you have old written records of your knowledge.â
âIt didnât even cross your mind to take it.â
âWhen I realized I didnât consider it, I did think that I must be bloody losing it.â
I sigh, finally give in, and ask the question Avitue obviously wants me to ask. âWhy is it shaped like that?â
âItâs a devil phallus. Because Iâm a devil.â
âIt seems a bit . . . large, donât you think?â
She turns it as if considering, and the silicone length sways menacingly in her hand. âItâs average?â Whatever my face does in response makes her choke on a laugh. âI see. Weâll ease you into debauchery yet.â She sets the toy aside, and it vanishes without her touch. âBefore I leave you, may I grant your other wish?â she asks, cupping my face gently in the heat of her hands. Her gaze is sharp, and for a moment, I forget to breathe.
âYes,â I whisper.
She blinks, and then sheâs seeing through me, turning over desires and fears to seek whatâs underneath. I experience it as a tug in my chest, bidding my heart to come undone and spill all its hoarded secrets.
